Trip and Activity Permission Information Guide

Is your troop planning a trip or an activity away from your regular meeting place?   Many changes were made to the troop trip approval process effect August 1, 2010.  Use the information below to be sure you are in the know about the changes. This is not an event or troop camping registration tool. For registration information for troop camping on a council campsite or for an event from the Program Catalog click here.

Before taking any trip:

Trips and Overnights 2010 is an updated training with all new trip information that became effective as of August 1, 2010 and is required and should be completed by the adult associated with the troop who will be primarily responsible for planning trips and travel for the troop. See Learning Opportunities on the Web where you can sign up to take the class on-line.  In addition to the new training, troop and activity leaders should thoroughly review Volunteer Essentials 2010 which includes all new information regarding  trip and travel and activity approval.

Day trips and overnight trips of one or two nights:

If you are planning a day trip or a trip of one or two nights and you will not be participating in any of the following high risk activities: Archery, backpacking, camping, challenge or adventure courses including indoor/outdoor climbing walls, activities involving horses, riflery/gun safety, rafting/tubing/boating, swimming or downhill skiing, here are the new guidelines for travel.

For day trips and trips of one or two nights: The troop leader is responsible for ensuring that all safety guidelines are followed for trips taken by the troop.  An application does not need to be submitted to the council unless a high risk activity is involved.  Please be sure to read and share with the other adults attending the trip the following information found in Volunteer Essentials 2010:

  • Chapter 7 – Safety Information, pages 66 – 76
  • Appendix I: For Travel Volunteers, pages 99 – 105

Leaders please be aware that although written authorization is no longer required for trips of this nature – intentionally ignoring the written safety procedures provided by the council could result in personal liability and loss of/or reduction of council provided secondary insurance.  If you have any questions regarding the trip you are planning to take, please email your question to trips@gsgatl.org and a staff member will respond to your question within 48 hours.

Special note for Daisy and new troop leaders:

The council strongly advises leaders of Daisies and other new troops to follow a progression beginning with short local trips and advancing to longer trips to allow the adults to monitor how the girls and adults interact and the readiness of the girls to travel without a parent along.

High Risk Activities, Cruises and International Travel:

Written authorization is still required for trips of three nights or more, international trips and cruises and trips that include participation in any of the following high risk activities Archery, backpacking, camping, challenge or adventure courses including indoor/outdoor climbing walls, activities involving horses, riflery/gun safety, rafting/tubing/boating, swimming or downhill skiing?

High Risk Activity Authorization:

Troops and groups may submit an application for authorization to participate in a high risk activity – including any camping – by using the High Risk Approval Activity Form.

Please note that if you are participating in a high risk activity on one of our council operated campsites, the High Risk Approval Activity Form is not required.
